Seán's Background & Experience
Seán grew up in Dingle town and developed his passion for documenting the peninsula's landscapes while studying Geography at University College Cork. The degree wasn't just academic — it gave him frameworks for understanding how landscapes shape communities, which would become central to his writing style later on.
After graduating in 2010, he spent eight years with the Irish Tourism Board, conducting accessibility audits on coastal pathways and developing guidelines for senior-friendly travel experiences. This wasn't comfortable desk work. He was out on trails testing wheelchair accessibility, measuring gradient angles, timing walking routes, and speaking with older adults about what actually works in practice versus what sounds good in theory.
A turning point came in 2015 when he began collaborating directly with Dingle's fishing communities to create detailed guides about their villages and harbours. This work earned him recognition from the Kerry Tourism Alliance and established him as an authority on sustainable village tourism. What he realised was this: retirement shouldn't close doors to meaningful travel experiences. It should open them wider.
In 2018, Seán transitioned to independent writing and consulting, focusing entirely on retirement travel guides and accessible leisure activities. He approaches each route with meticulous attention to surface conditions, gradient challenges, weather patterns, and rest point locations. His recommendations reflect real-world accessibility, not theoretical ideals. That's the difference between a guide that sounds good and a guide you actually trust.
Today at hawkmoor Limited, he leads content development for retirement travel experiences across Ireland's southwest, combining practical accessibility knowledge with authentic storytelling about coastal regions and fishing village culture.

Why Seán Writes
"Retirement should open doors to meaningful travel experiences, not close them. I write guides that assume you're intelligent, curious, and capable — just maybe not interested in scrambling over wet rocks or pushing yourself to exhaustion. Good travel writing tells you what you're actually getting, not what you're supposed to want."
Seán's approach is fundamentally different from typical travel writing. He doesn't write to sell experiences. He writes to help people make decisions based on real information. That means being honest about difficulty levels, weather patterns, accessibility challenges, and what you'll actually encounter on the ground.
What drives him is the belief that retirement travel shouldn't be either "gentle activities for older people" or standard tourism content. It should be authentic, specific, and respect your intelligence. You're not looking for motivation speeches. You're looking for routes that won't hurt your knees, villages that'll feel authentic to visit, and guides that tell you what to actually bring and when to actually go.
Every guide he writes starts with research in the field, not at a desk. He walks the routes himself, times them, notes the surfaces, identifies the viewpoints, and speaks with local people. That's why his recommendations work in practice, not just in theory.
